About us

ACS Distance Education courses are ideal for people wanting to pursue their passions by learning for life or to develop and build inspiring careers. Established in 1979, ACS Distance Education is a leading Australian Distance Education provider offering over 600 courses via online or even correspondence (paper notes) if you need. Our courses, course notes, and most recommended texts, are all developed by our own staff. Our staff are all professionals in their field and have studied, worked and created innovation in their chosen field, providing the best support and leadership to our students. Education Philosophy We believe that by providing a different education to main stream vocational colleges and universities, we are able to differentiate our graduates and give them real life advantages over graduates from more traditional institutions. These differences however must be (and are) pursued without compromising academic excellence in any way whatsoever. In principle we tend to favour experiential learning and problem based learning. We believe learning is more important than assessment. For us, assessment should be provided more to enhance the learning experience and less to rank students.

Do we need to shrink our economy? Philip Adams was interviewing Japanese academic Sato, about connections between capitalism & climate change yesterday & his best selling book on Karl Marx. Apparently Marx studied the natural world, considering why ecosystems crashed & organisms went extinct. Marx deduced too much human growth ultimately led to decline, and suggested sharing limited resources and limiting growth in order to prevent decline. Sound familiar? Sato pointed out that soviet and chinese style communism has embraced growth and in that way is not really what marx was on about. Maybe thinking smaller is the solution to a happier and more sustainable world. Vanuatu was named the happiest place on earth last week - with an average annual income of $610 USD per person --- food for thought.

Play is more important to human development and wellbeing than what you might think. It isn't just something we do on a whim; nor is it something just for children. Play helps shape our lives. As children, it is more important to learning than the classroom. As adults it can be an important way to destress (eg. playing sport, playing with children). It can be an important tool for therapists rebuilding physical and psychological capabilities after injuries. People today build careers around helping others play; as play therapists, play leaders, playscape designers - etc. I wrote a book on play in 1981 (published by Leisure Press). I spenyears building playgrounds ad still run courses on playground design, play leadership and play therapy. Read this blog article for more insight https://lnkd.in/gmPVNF_u

Our cottage garden mid autumn (last week) on the Gold Coast. We started 2 years ago with very poor soil (rock, clay and poor drainage). After digging in lots of mulch, installing a few drains, and initially planting on mounds, the soil is now full of earthworms and becoming much better. Plants are growing better all the time, but some slower than others. One of the biggest issues still is wildlife digging up or eating some plants. We are largely controlling that with good results using moveable wire cages. Roses are gradually establishing on wire trellis either side - but that may take another year or two to provide the enclosed garden effect we are aiming at. The area is up a hill, 300 metres behind the house on our 2 acre property - providing us with a wonderful destination and place to escape to after work.

Anxiety is normal; and perhaps more common than you think. Learning to understand and deal with anxiety can be important for happiness, health and wellbeing. Watch this video our health science staff made for some more insight into the subject: https://lnkd.in/dajPGdBb If you want to go further, see these online courses we developed. https://lnkd.in/gKzWMZiX
