Reduce Stress, Improve your career

Reduce your Stress and Improve your Career Prospects.

Research in 2015 by AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) found that on average, people have 94 sick days and are late for work 141 times in their working lives.

Taking time off sick can obviously be due to physical illnesses or injury, but stress can have a big impact upon how we feel about ourselves and how we feel physically.

Research by Kiecolt and Glaser found that stress (such as taking exams) can reduce how our immune systems function.

So when we are under stress, we may be more likely to catch colds, infections and other diseases.

But stress alone can make us feel physically and mentally ill. When people say they are stressed, it is often taken quite lightly, but stress can have a massive impact upon us.

The common responses to stress are –

  • Dry mouth and throat
  • Sweaty palms
  • Rapid heartbeat, increased blood pressure
  • Restlessness, fidgeting
  • Tightening of muscles
  • Stomach ache
  • Head ache, neck ache
  • Inability to sleep
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Anxiety, panic
  • Shallow and rapid breathing
  • Shaking
  • Fixation or worrying about symptoms
  • Feeling generally ‘on edge’

However, if stress continues over a period of time, there can be other results, such as

  • Poor immune system function
  • Susceptibility to cold and flu
  • Feeling run-down
  • Digestive disorders
  • Stomach ulcers, weight gain, bowel and intestinal diseases
  • Chronic and serious diseases e.g. cancer, heart disease
  • High blood pressure, heart attack
  • Psychological disorders - anxiety, paranoia, depression

Taking time off work or being late can be a sign that someone is stressed. It does not present us in a very good light if we want promotion or a new job.

If you are struggling to cope with the stress in your life, why not consider trying to manage your own stress or even help others to manage their stress.
